National Housing Act of 1934 is adopted in Washington, D.C.

Signed by President Franklin Roosevelt, the law creates the Federal Housing Administration. Its original purpose is not so much to promote the construction of public housing as to encourage the construction of private housing by insuring construction mortgages to developers and promoting more affordable home mortgages to individuals.
